Factfile
Surnames
A child would always take their father's first name. For a boy ‘ap' (or ‘ab') means ‘son of' and for girls ‘ferch' means ‘daughter of'. For instance Llewelyn ap Iorwerth means ‘Llewelyn son of Iorwerth'. Over time, this has been corrupted so:
-
Ap Richard (son of Richard) has become Pritchard
-
Ap Owen (son of Owen) has become Bowen (with the ‘p' hardened to a ‘b')
